It’s officially 2017, and we are welcoming the New Year here in Austin, TX! In this post, the Dobie Twenty21 Blog is featuring a few of our favorite tips for reaching your goals and keeping your New Year’s resolutions. We hope that you find the motivation to stick with your resolutions through January 2018!
You will never reach a goal that you are not fully committed to. Make sure that you pick a goal that is meaningful to you. Why do you want to achieve your goal? What are you gaining by achieving it? Ask yourself these questions before you begin to work on your goal, and then write down your commitment to your goal in a journal, notebook, or on your favorite social media site. When you find your motivation lagging, look back on the reasons why you started working on your goal in the first place. Use the optimism embedded in your goals to propel yourself forward.
Put yourself on a schedule
Once you’ve committed to your goals, look at them clearly in the hard light of day. Set a schedule for yourself, complete with due dates and daily to-do lists. Sometimes sticking with a resolution just means making it a habit in your life. Normalize the goal so that it feels natural to work on it everyday.
Push yourself, but don’t push yourself too hard. Remember to reward yourself whenever you reach one of your due dates. Celebrate each and every victory on the way. If you work faithfully on your goal everyday for two weeks, reward yourself with a fancy dinner or night out to the movies. Just remember to keep rewarding yourself. You will resent your goal if you feel miserable every time you have to work on it.
Find your inspiration
If you find your inspiration, keeping your motivation up will be easy. Who or what inspired you to set this goal? Make your own “inspiration notebook” with quotes, pictures, and notes to help you stay in the zone, especially when your motivation begins to drain. Listen to a TED talk that inspires you. Do anything you can to stay inspired.
Work past the wall
Anyone who has worked on a long term project has found themselves hitting a wall. Work past the wall by pushing forward, even on bad days. Recognize that some days will be harder than others, give yourself a moment to recoup, and then keep working. You’ll be surprised at what you can do when you simply decide to work.
