Dorm Room Decorating

It can be difficult to decide how to decorate your dorm room or student apartment. You don’t know how long you’re going to be staying — hopefully that dream internship or study abroad comes through — and there are often rules about what you can and can’t hang on your walls. Sometimes there are restrictions on the extra furniture you’re allowed to bring to the apartment, and you really can’t (and shouldn’t!) paint the walls.

This week Dobie Twenty21 has four dorm-friendly decorating ideas to make your apartment feel like home.

Tapestries, tapestries, tapestries

Tapestries are an easy way to add a splash of personality to your space. While they’re most often associated with a more bohemian look, they come in so many patterns, sizes, and shapes that we’re sure you’ll be able to find one that fits your taste. We recommend going with an outdoor scene. That way, when you’re stuck inside studying for finals, you can relax by looking at a beach or forest view.

Pinterest in Real Life
HGTV.com suggests hanging an inspiration board in your dorm room “to post things that inspire you and make you happy.” We think that this is a great idea! There’s nothing like waking up and seeing something that represents your dreams and aspirations for the coming years. An inspiration board will add some visual interest to your space and keep you motivated while you write that killer paper for your British Lit class.

Bedding
Let’s be real — bedding really makes a difference in a space. Give your bedroom a touch of color and a lot of personality by picking sheets that express you. Even though you love your roommate, sometimes sharing a space can be a drag on your personal style; they want the apartment one way and you want the apartment another way. Bedding is your chance to make a statement your roommate can’t object to.

Washi Tape Makes All the Difference

If you’ve got an artistic bent, washi tape is the way to express yourself. We’ve seen everything from geometric hearts to city skylines made of washi tape. Washi tape is safe on walls and peels off easily. It’s a unique way to spruce up any space.
